Guinea assembly selects new leader

Conakry - A lawmaker from the party of Guinea President Alpha Conde has been chosen to lead the new national assembly following highly divisive elections last year intended to complete the West African nation's transition to democracy from military rule.

Jean-Marie Dore, the lawmaker who oversaw Monday's vote, said the post of national assembly president would be filled by Kory Kondiano.

Last year's legislative poll was watched closely by observers fearing a repeat of the 2010 presidential election, which laid bare ethnic tensions between the Peul and Malinke communities.

The election saw only scattered violence, but electoral officials took weeks to announce the results and opposition leaders did not confirm until last month that they would take their seats.

The governing party coalition ultimately claimed 66 seats to the opposition's 58.
