Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki and his wife Zanele will fly to Kigali on Wednesday to attend a major ceremony marking the genocide 10 years ago which left up to a million Rwandans dead, a senior foreign affairs department spokesperson said.
The Mbekis would be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Dirk du Toit, the Deputy Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister, foreign affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said on Tuesday.
He said the South African delegation would take part in the commemoration service "conscious and aware of the unfortunate experiences of inhumanity that the people of Rwanda" suffered.
Mbeki cemented ties between South Africa and Rwanda during his state visit to that country in 2000.
