Rabat - About 1 200 Islamists imprisoned in Morocco started an indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday to demand their release and an international investigation into terrorist attacks perpetrated in Casablanca in 2003, in which 45 people were killed.
Spokespersons for Islamic organisations told Spanish journalists the prisoners had been unjustly connected to the attacks, in which suicide bombers detonated several explosive devices outside Western and Israeli facilities.
Four religious leaders organised the hunger strike, according to Spanish press reports. Islamists in 11 prisons across Morocco were participating.
Police at the time arrested thousands of suspects, but those responsible for the attacks have still not been determined.
