Maputo - About 1 400 people will be relocated from their homes in north western Tete province to make way for Mozambique's second mega dam project to be built on the Zambezi River, 70 kilometres downstream of the Cahora Bassa hydro-electric, said the daily Noticias on Saturday.
The Maputo-based paper said citing sources from the Tete provincial government that the idea for transferring the people was arrived at after the conclusion of the impact studies of the controversial Mepanda Nkuwa dam.
Construction of the dam which is now scheduled to start by 2011 has been resisted by environmentalists who think the dam is not viable and a threat to the environment.
The dam is expected to generate at least 2 900 mega watts, most of which would be imported to neighbouring countries facing severe power shortages.
