Lagos - A truck caught fire along with nine other vehicles on Sunday on a road outside of Nigeria's economic capital of Lagos, burning an unspecified number of people to death, police said.
"Ten vehicles were burned, (including) a truck carrying petroleum products," Lagos police spokesperson Frank Mba told AFP. "Bodies were charred and burned beyond recognition."
Local media reported, however, that the truck was carrying sugar.
Mba was unsure of the number of dead following the accident on a major road linking Lagos to the city of Ibadan.
Traffic is often heavy on the road on Sundays due to the large number of evangelical mega-churches along the highway.
The cause of the accident was unclear, Mba said.
Petroleum distribution in Nigeria, the world's eighth largest oil exporter, is done mostly by road.
