Mogadishu (dpa) - At least 11 people were killed when a suicide car bomber rammed into the gate of Somalia's presidential compound late on Monday, a government official said.

At least 23 people were wounded in the attack in Mogadishu, which appeared to target Somali leaders and the UN officials who were holding a meeting inside the presidential villa at the time, local government spokesperson Abdifatah Omar Halane told dpa.

The Islamist militant group al-Shabaab, which regularly attacks government officials and civilians in Somalia, claimed responsibility.

At least three foreigners, including a Turkish national, and a local woman selling the chewing plant khat, are among the dead, a senior Somali intelligence officer told dpa.

"Blood is everywhere outside the presidential compound," witness Asho Gele told dpa.

Somalia's information minister Mohamed Hayir Maareye and the UN envoy to the country, Nikolas Kay, condemned the attack.
