Lilongwe - Twelve people have died after a Tanzanian boat that was sailing from Mbamba Bay in Tanzania to Nkhata Bay in Malawi sunk in Lake Malawi on Saturday.

A Malawian official Chikumbutso Ziyaya said Tanzania’s boat, MV Mapeza had developed a fault on an out-let pump which was supposed to be draining water.

“We last talked to MV Mapeza passengers around 03:00 in the morning on Saturday. The passengers were sent SOS messages to be rescued after their boat was full of water due to strong wind,” Ziyaya was quoted in the media as saying.

According to Ziyaya, when the rescue team arrived on the scene they found that the boat had already sunk.

He then disclosed that of the missing passengers, seven were Tanzanians, while the nationality of the other five passengers was yet to established, but were suspected to be Malawians.

“I suspect that the boat had a faulty water pump that is why the vessel was unable to flash out water from the boat,” Ziyaya said.
