15 escape in CAR prison breakout
Bangui - A prison warden at Baoro in the Central African Republic shot one prisoner dead during a jailbreak in which 15 other detainees escaped," a police official said on Thursday.
"The drama happened last Tuesday when the only prison warden, who had just given the meal of the day to the 35 prisoners held at Boaro, was floored and heavily beaten by the latter," the source said.
"Taking advantage of the situation, 16 detainees fled. However, the warden pulled himself together and opened fire, mortally wounding one of them," he added, saying that 15 prisoners were still on the run.
Most of the detainees in Baoro, about 340km west of Bangui, are highwaymen known locally as "zaraguinas" and gangsters who have yet to go on trial, the source said.
Prisons in the poor, landlocked country are very run-down, unhealthy and dirty.
Prisoners often lack food, though families can visit to provide meals, and medical care is wanting.
