Marrakech - Morocco's official news agency says 16 royal guards have died in a bus crash after the driver of the vehicle veered  off a road and it plummeted 200m.

The MAP agency reported that the accident happened on a road linking two cities on Morocco's northern coast on Saturday.

The report said the driver lost control of the bus at a bend in the road and it overturned.

In addition to those killed, another 42 guards were injured, including eight seriously.

They were all taken to hospital in Al Hoceima on the country's north coast, about 450km northeast of the capital, Rabat.
