16 die in Ethiopian rioting

Addis Ababa - At least 16 people were killed and nearly 100 injured in the Ethiopian capital on Wednesday in a second day of clashes between armed police and demonstrators, said hospital sources.

The latest fatalities bring to at least 20 the number of people killed in two days of unrest in Addis Ababa, where the opposition has defied government warnings not to stage protests against May elections it insists were rigged.

Sources in Paulus Hospital said six people died of gunshot wounds after Wednesday's unrest which rocked several areas of the capital. They said they were treating 11 others.

Doctors at Addis Ababa's Black Lion Hospital said six people there had died from, and 40 others been injured by, gunshot wounds.

Medical officials in Zewditu Hospital in the centre of the capital said four people had died there and more than 40 were being treated as a result of wounds from the rioting.

The fatalities came a day after at least eight people, among them two police officers, were killed and dozens wounded during similar confrontations in Addis Ababa.

Max says... I agree with you on this one, but the problem is that the person with the right credentials will never be allowed to step forward...that is the problem with the African interpretation of democracy. Read the article...
