Bamako - At least 18 people including a child were killed and 27 injured when a bus and a lorry collided head on a Malian national highway, authorities said on Friday.

Civil Protection official Oumar Tangara said the accident happened on Thursday between Bamako and southern Sikasso, adding that the death toll was provisional and could yet rise.

"There are at least 27 injured, including some seriously," he said.

A medical source said a number of the injured were "between life and death".

The accident happened after one of the bus's tyres burst sending it into the path of the oncoming lorry, a Malian police source said.

Why are overseas accidents being reported? This type of thing is almost a daily occurrence in SA, like this: http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/13-in-total-killed-in-KZN-crash-20110930

Maybe because road accidents here in SA are as common as murders? Either that or news24 is bored again
