Lome - Eighteen people were killed and 40 others injured, 25 of them seriously, in a collision between a bus and a lorry in Togo, police said on Sunday.

The collision happened early on Sunday some 462km north of Lome and involved a bus travelling from the capital and a cattle truck.

"An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of this accident," police officer Kpatcha Atoulelou told television channels.

Fatal accidents are common on the main roads of the tiny west African nation.

The poor state of some roads, speeding, overloading, drunk-driving and the poor maintenance of public transport and heavy goods vehicles are among the causes.

According to recent government statistics, 640 people were killed and 7 638 others were injured in road accidents in Togo last year.

In 2012, 753 people were killed and 9 589 were injured.
