Abidjan - A spokesperson for Ivory Coast's justice ministry says two allies of former President Laurent Gbagbo have been charged with genocide linked to violence that claimed about 3 000 lives following the disputed 2010 election.

Serges Kouame said on Wednesday charges have been filed against Abou Drahamane Sangare, a former leader of Gbagbo's party, and Genevieve Bro-Grebe, leader of a pro-Gbagbo women's group. It was not immediately clear what maximum sentence they might be facing.

Gbagbo ruled Ivory Coast for a decade and is currently being held at the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity. He refused to accept defeat at the polls, and his government is accused of resorting to violence against the elected president Alassane Ouattara's supporters.

Eight of Gbagbo's loyalists have so far been charged with genocide.
