2 Mozambican cops jailed
Maputo - Two police officials have each been sentenced to a year in prison for negligence which led to the death of 12 prisoners in an overcrowded police cell in Mogincual district, Mozambique, a report said on Thursday.
The daily Noticias said the Angoche district court sentenced the former head of the police service in Mogincual district, Domingos Coutinho, and an ex-police official to the prison term.
The court acquitted Dionisio Nacoto, head of the criminal investigation department of the national police service, for lack of evidence.
The 12 prisoners were arrested for violence in the northern Mogincual district of Nampula in March 2009.
They later died of suffocation in an overcrowded cell.
Police authorities immediately suspended the three senior officers at that police station amid investigations.
The suspects had been arrested after participating in mob violence which resulted in the destruction of a government building and intimidation of health officials who were accused of "manufacturing" cholera.
