Cairo - A Libyan security official says three foreigners, including an Italian man, have been kidnapped in the western town of Zuwara.

He said the other two are believed to be from the Balkan region. All three are employees of an Italian construction company in Zuwara, he said.

The official says authorities have arrested a Libyan man suspected of involvement in Sunday's kidnapping, but gave no details. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to brief the media.

The kidnappings are the latest evidence of the chaos and lawlessness sweeping the energy-rich North African nation since the ousting and killing in 2011 of long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
