Luanda - Thirty-five people died following acute shortages of food and water in February in a southern village in Angola bordering Namibia, an opposition official told AFP on Thursday.
"A total of 35 people died of hunger in Muhungo in the space of six days at the end of February due to a shortage of food and water in the Namibe province," said Altino Kapango from the youth wing of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita).
He said at the start of the year, "officials in Namibe having forecasted the shortages, asked Luanda for financial aid to transfer between 200 and 300 residents of Muhongo to other parts of the province", but did not know the outcome.
The province is part of the Kalahari desert, the second largest desert in the world after the Sahara.
