40 immigrants die off Senegal

Dakar - At least 40 Africans died at sea off Senegal as they were trying to reach the Canary Islands, said police said on Monday, quoting survivors.

They said the boat had set off at the end of November from Diogue Island in southern Senegal, with 130 people aboard, but only 90 were left after it ran aground north of Dakar on Saturday.

At least 70 survivors, including the vessel's captain, had fled before police arrived.

Police spokesperson Colonel Alioune Ndiaye said that some remaining survivors had spoken of 40 people who "died at sea and were thrown overboard" during the voyage.
