Cape Town - Three African National Congress and two opposition party MPs have been elected to serve in the Pan African parliament (PAP), which is to meet for the first time in January next year.
Voting to choose five of six nominees took place in the national assembly and the national council of provinces on Wednesday afternoon.
The MPs are: Dr Frene Ginwala, ANC; Makhosazana Njobe, ANC; Johannes Mahlangu, ANC; Harriet Ngubane, Inkatha Freedom Party; and Dr Boy Geldenhuys, New National Party.
Mahlangu is the only NCOP member among the five; his election meets the requirement that the group chosen to serve in the Pan African parliament should comprise members from both houses.
Democratic Alliance nominee Colin Eglin was squeezed out during the voting process.
The PAP founding protocol states that the institution "shall reflect the diversity of political opinions in each national parliament".
