Maputo - Six Mozambican soldiers were killed on Monday in an attack by militia members on an arms depot, national radio reported.

The report blamed Renamo, a former guerrilla group that fought Frelimo, the ruling party, during Mozambique's lengthy civil war that ended in 1992.

The early morning attack took place in the central province of Sofala.

Local official Rosa Luis was quoted as saying public institutions, including schools, were closed as a result of the attack.

At least one suspected Renamo fighter was wounded and captured, according to the report.

Renamo was blamed for two attacks in Sofala in March, but denied the accusations.

Local elections are slated for November and general elections will take place next year. Renamo has been facing declining support.
