6 killed in Burundi mine collapse
Bujumbura – A mine pit collapsed in northern Burundi on Wednesday, killing at least six miners with others believed to be trapped, an official said.
Up to 15 mine workers had descended into the pit to dig for cassiterite – a tin ore – when the walls crumbled due to recent heavy rains, local county official Mathias Manirumva told AFP.
"We're trying to unblock the mine to find those still trapped, but there is little hope of finding them alive," Manirumva said.
Such accidents are common in the country where artisanal miners dig for gold or cassiterite.
