Addis Ababa - Sixty-seven people were killed and 31 injured in a weekend tribal attack in southern Ethiopia, independent sources told AFP here on
Tuesday.
Late on Friday, members of the Guji and Borena tribes attacked the smaller Garri tribe in the district of Arero, 700km south of Addis Ababa, sources said.
On Saturday local authorities had said at least 65, mostly women and children, died in the massacre.
The sources on Tuesday said the massacre was in reprisal for the killing of a Guji several days earlier by a Garri. The Garri men were in hiding.
Ethiopian troops had been sent in from Yabelo and Moyale, west and south of Arero, to maintain order.
Relations between the Borena and the Garri have reportedly been tense for a long time due to disputes over grazing lands, water and neigbouring territories. - Sapa-AFP
