7 100 Somalis need safe refuge

Geneva - The UN refugee agency says 7 100 Somali refugees are stuck just inside the Kenyan border dangerously close to the violence they are fleeing.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is urging Kenyan authorities to allow the Somalis access to a safe site already identified.

Spokesperson Adrian Edwards told reporters in Geneva on Friday that the civilians - mostly women, children and the elderly - face dire health and security conditions.

Edwards said another 30 000 have been displaced inside Somalia by clashes between an Islamist group and a government-allied militia in the Beled-Hawa district. No humanitarian organisation has had access to them.
