Ouagadougou - The government of Burkina Faso says at least 8 000 refugees from the Tuareg ethnic group have crossed into its territory from neighbouring Mali in recent days.

A new Tuareg rebellion in Mali has destabilised that nation, spurring the exodus.

In the statement on Wednesday, Burkina Faso says the refugees were in the capital, Ouagadougou, and other cities.

The statement adds that some are being housed in a football stadium in "difficult sanitary conditions".
