Maputo - Eight presidential candidates and 26 political parties will contest Mozambique's general elections in October, the electoral commission (CNE) said on Wednesday.

CNE spokesperson Juvenal Bucuana told reporters in Maputo that the 26 political parties would field candidates for the legislative and provincial parliamentary seats in the elections on October 28.

He was speaking at the end of the registration of candidates for the general elections which would be the most contested since the end of the 16-year civil war in 1992.

Bucuana said most of the political parties had registered their candidates on the last day causing congestion at the CNE offices.

Voter registration in the southern African country and in another nine countries where Mozambican nationals were living also ended on Wednesday.

Bucuana said at least 70% of the projected voters had registered although he could not give exact figures as officials were still compiling the details.
