Gaberone - Botswana has declared 870 people prohibited immigrants since 2008, labour and home affairs minister Edwin Batshu told Parliament on Tuesday.

A prohibited immigrant is an undesirable inhabitant or visitor in Botswana and is declared by the president, using any information deemed to be reliable, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Batshu was answering a question from Member of Parliament for Selebis-Phikwe West Dithapelo Keorapetse, who had wanted to know the number of foreign nationals declared prohibited immigrants since president Ian Khama took office in April 2008.

The home affairs minister also had the power to declare someone a prohibited immigrant before having it approved by the president.
