A bridge too far

Monrovia - Several civilians drowned on Thursday while trying to swim across the Mesurado River, which separates the northern districts of the Liberian capital which were held by rebels from the government-controlled south.
An AFP reporter saw at least four people drown as they tried to cross the river to meet up with their relatives on the other side.
They tried to swim across after peacekeepers prevented them from walking across a bridge which links the two halves of the city, even though rebels began withdrawing from the north - including its key port area - earlier in the day.
