Accident kills Egyptian soldier

2010-04-13 11:31
Cairo - An Egyptian security official says a road accident near the border with Israel has killed one Egyptian soldier and left 21 others seriously injured.

The official says a truck carrying soldiers driving back to base after their night shifts collided head-on with a merchant truck. The accident took place on Tuesday morning in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, about 30km from the Israeli border.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorised to speak to the media.

He said some of the soldiers had serious head injuries and were receiving medical attention at the hospital in nearby city of El-Arish.

About 6 000 people die every year in road accidents in Egypt because of bad roads and poor traffic laws enforcement.
