Bern - Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said it was up to African countries to resolve the conflict in Chad.
Speaking in Switzerland on Thursday, Obasanjo said: "The problem of Chad is a problem we should not leave unattended.
"More importantly, Chad needs peace and needs security to develop.
"We can all do something. But, let the problems of Africa be handled first by Africans and let our friends and partners give their support in solving these problems."
Military sources in Chad said rebels were fighting Chadian government troops on the outskirts of the country's capital N'Djamena on Thursday.
Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno announced on state-run radio on Thursday that the situation within the city was "under control".
Chadian foreign minister Ahmat Allami has accused neighbouring Sudan of engineering a coup attempt and sponsoring the rebels.
