'Aids' nurses trial resumes

Tripoli - The trial of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor accused of injecting Aids-contaminated blood into Libyan children resumed in Tripoli on Tuesday, said reports.

The trial opened in the presence of all the accused and their lawyers. The lawyer for the Bulgarian nurses, Othman al-Bizanti, had said he would be asking for their release on bail at the hearing.

A previous hearing on May 11 was adjourned for procedural reasons, and the accused continued to be held in custody.

Imprisoned since 1999, the nurses and the doctor were condemned to death on May 6 2004 in the eastern city of Benghazi.

They had been convicted of infecting 426 Libyan children with the Aids virus while they were working at a local hospital.
