Nairobi - At least six people were killed Sunday in attacks on two police stations along Kenya's border with Somalia, local media reported.

Militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attacks that left two police officers and four civilians dead, The Standard newspaper said. Two others, including a local police chief, were injured in the attack.

Six officers were missing, and al-Shabaab claimed online that it had taken two police officers as hostages.

Kenyan troops have been engaged in military operations in neighbouring Somalia since 2011 in a bid to root out Islamist militants.

Al-Shabaab, which controls large swathes of south and central Somalia, has been waging an insurgency against the government since 2007.

The Islamist insurgents have been pushed out of the capital Mogadishu and most major towns by African peacekeepers. But al-Shabaab continues to stage attacks, including in Kenya.
