Ambassadors held for graft
Bujumbura - Burundi's ambassador to Kenya as well as the country's outgoing envoy to Italy have been arrested on charges of embezzling state funds, high-ranking officials said on Tuesday.
"Salvator Ntacobamaze, Burundi's ambassador to Kenya, and Leopold Ndayisaba, who until recently was ambassador to Italy, were arrested and incarcerated last night," an official in the anti-corruption judge's office said.
Officials from the prisons authority also speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed the information.
"Burundi's ambassador to Kenya is accused of embezzling 48,000 dollars dedicated to the purchase of official vehicles and 16,000 dollars reserved for paying the rental of the embassy's offices," the judicial source said.
"The ambassador to Italy embezzled $86 000 from the embassy's general running costs budget," the official added.
Ntacobamaze is an important figure in the small central African nation's ruling party, a former head of protocol at the presidency and minister of interior and public security.
