Cape Town – Ugandan officials are reportedly holding talks with the European Union over a controversial anti-gay bill signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni last month.

The approval of the bill sparked criticism from the international community with countries like Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden threatening to freeze their aid to the east African country.

The law criminalises promotion of homosexuality and makes it mandatory to report gays.

According to the Daily Nation, Ugandan officials said the country's foreign minister, Sam Kutesa, would be meeting on Friday with the head of the EU delegation in Uganda, Kristian Schmidt.

"It is a dialogue between the European Union and the Uganda government on the anti-homosexuality Law," Uganda's foreign affairs ministry spokesperson, Fred Opolot was quoted as saying.

The EU is one of the top donors to Uganda, with more than €460m channelled into aid programmes each year, the report said.
