Tel Aviv - Israeli soldiers have discovered an underground tunnel on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, believed to be used for smuggling weapons, said an army spokesperson in Tel Aviv on Friday.
The tunnel runs from the Palestinian city of Rafah 15m underground.
At least 10 tanks and army bulldozers rolled into Rafah, on Gaza's southern border overnight to search for tunnels used by militants to smuggle weapons from Egypt.
Israeli soldiers shot dead a 19-year-old Palestinian during "intensive" exchanges of fire with local gunmen who confronted the force.
Residents said the dead was not an armed militant but was throwing stones at the scene of the shooting.
The operation had begun early on Friday and had not yet concluded by evening. - Sapa-dpa
