Johannesburg - The beheaded body of a new-born boy was found on Thursday on a street in Embalenhle near Secunda.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said members of the public saw a dog sniffing at a body at 10:30 and immediately called the police.
"It is a shocking and barbaric thing and we will take strong action against whoever is responsible. That body was fresh and shows the boy had been born a few hours earlier," said Khoabane.
He said police recovered the head about 12m to 13m from the body and were not sure of the infant's cause of death.
"We have taken the body to the mortuary and we are still investigating.
Khoabane said: "We warn pregnant women who realise they can't take care of their babies once they are born to consult authorities for help."
