Abuja - A bomb has
exploded at a beer garden at a Nigerian army barracks in the capital Abuja, where revellers had
gathered to celebrate New Year's Eve and state-TV says 30 people were
killed.
An anchor on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority
gave that death toll to viewers on Friday night. The channel did not give
an estimate on the number of people injured.
Air Marshal Oluseyi
Petirin, the air force's top official, told journalists the bomb was
placed where "people are relaxing because of the new year".
The
bomb was planted in an area of market stalls and beer parlors referred
to locally as a "Mammy market".
There, civilians and soldiers regularly
gather for meals and drinks.
