Blasts, gunfire ring out in Nigerian city

2012-05-01 12:57

Kano - Gunfire and explosions rang out through Nigeria's main northern city of Kano on Tuesday as Nigerian forces battled Islamist militants in a raid on one of their hideouts, witnesses and the military said.

Residents of the Sabuwar Gandu area of Kano awoke to several loud blasts and a raging gun battle. There were no immediate reports of casualty figures.

"Our men just raided one of the hideouts of the elements ... where we discovered explosives and weapons," said a spokesman for the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Kano, Lieutenant Iweha Ikedichi.

After a relative lull, Boko Haram attacks have surged in the past few days, dampening hopes that tighter security in the north had drastically reduced their capability.

‘Kept awake by blasts and gunfire’

The shadowy sect says it is fighting to reinstate an ancient Islamic caliphate in Africa's most populous nation, whose 160 million people are split roughly evenly between Muslims and Christians along north-south lines.

"We were kept awake by bomb blasts and gunfire. It is really terrifying. We can't say where exactly the blasts are coming from. Everyone is indoors," Anthonia Okafor, a student at Kano university who lives in the Sabuwar Gandu area, told Reuters by telephone.

Hundreds have died in bomb and gun attacks across the north and in the capital Abuja since the Islamists launched their uprising in 2009, targeting authorities, security forces and more recently the north's Christian minority.

University attack

A bomb blast struck a police chief's convoy in eastern Nigeria's Taraba state on Monday, killing 11 people.

Gunmen attacked a university theatre being used for Christian services in the northern city of Kano and a church in northeast Maiduguri, Boko Haram's hometown, on Sunday. In total 19 people died in the attacks.

The insurgency has replaced militancy in the oil producing Niger Delta to become the main security threat to President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, and it has gained momentum since his presidential election victory a year ago.

Suicide car bombers targeted the offices of newspaper This Day in Abuja and in Kaduna last week, killing at least four people and demonstrating the sect's continued ability to carry out co-ordinated strikes.

@Stefaans ,the Boko Haram sect is just a bunch of well trained mercenaries using Islam as a cover up just like the rest of the so called Islamic terrorists worldwide. I served in Nigerian Armed Forces for a couple of years and i can tell you without a shadow of doubt that there numerous proof uncovered by several intelligence unit in the Nigerian Armed Forces that top members of the Boko Haram sect were trained in the US by the CIA agents. You don't have to believe my allegations but your remember i told you so. Boko Haram’s major sponsor in Nigeria is a former Nigerian president who was also trained by the CIA. His name is Badamosi Babangida, he was supposed to be the new president of Nigeria to give the white house proxy control over Nigeria oil, unfortunately the plan crumbled. He also set up a proxy candidate but the candidate also failed to become president. Jonathan who is from the naija delta became president and that is where these evil man babangida decided to fund boko haram and unleash them on the populace. Do not be fooled by what the main stream media reports. Boko Haram is a politcal tool which is being used to achieve the goals of the NWO( New world order) organization in Nigeria.

      Omo - 2012-05-01 18:16

@Stefaans ,Boko Haram main goal is to make Nigeria ungovernable to the extant that Jonathan will have no choice but to ask the USA for help, grant the US permission to bring the Marines, FBI, Homeland security into Nigeria and build a permanent US military base on Nigerian soil. The Americans will come into Nigeria like saviours and the Nigerian populace will welcome them with open arms. Within months Boko Haram will be wiped out just like they “wiped” out Osama Bin Laden (*wink* wink*) They will now have military dominance on home soil over the Nigerian Armed Forces and Nigerians will be at the mercy of the white house and US senate 100%

Like it or not, Islam is a very intolerant religion! If its not their way its the wrong way! As long as Islam exists, things like these ll become a norm. Koran in one hand, gun in the other, a bomb in the underwear!? Oh Jesus!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-01 13:53

True, is there a single country in the world where these Islamist extremists have made a positive contribution to the quality of human life? Very worrying, these people must never be allowed to dominate this planet, they are a threat to human quality of life everywhere. Look what mayhem and destruction they are causing in Africa, a continent that is battling to get it together in the first place.

Spreading itself throughout the Western World & preying on the foolish & weak, who are " searching " for something in their lives.

      Gerhard - 2012-05-01 15:24

Islam is not a religion. It is a political party with a fascist core and as such should be fought wherever you encounter it.
