Yaounde - At least 11 people were killed and four others abducted by Islamist terror group Boko Haram in northern Cameroon, the national broadcaster reported on Thursday.

The insurgents killed two soldiers and nine civilians, and then displayed their mutilated bodies along the road, according to the police.

The four kidnapped persons include a police officer, two sons of the chief of Zigu Zigagu village in the Far North region and the brother of the sultan of Waza, the region's key town, said police spokesperson Albert Mekondane Obounou.

Boko Haram also burned a police vehicle and attacked a passenger bus driving toward the northern town of Kousseri.

President Paul Biya in May declared war on Boko Haram, after the Nigerian Islamists started to infiltrate into Cameroon.

Biya deployed more than a thousand troops and special units to the Far North Region to stop Boko Haram from infiltrating from neighbouring Nigeria.

The insurgents are reported to have recruited local young men.
