Burkina Faso protests close schools

2011-02-28 21:21

Ouagadougou - Burkina Faso says it has fired officials and closed schools indefinitely after student demonstrations left five people dead.

A government statement on Monday said the police chief and governor responsible for the city of Koudougou had been relieved of their duties.

Students demonstrated there last week over a jailed student who they said died because of poor treatment in custody. The government said he died of meningitis.

The government's decision to close schools was made after students at the University of Ouagadougou threatened to march in protest.

The government also vowed to investigate the incident, and called on local and religious leaders to bring calm to the West African country.
