Burundi's Nkurunziza wins again

Bujumbura - Pierre Nkurunziza was sworn in Thursday for a second five-year term as Burundi's president following a landslide victory in a June election that was boycotted by the opposition over fraud claims.

Nkurunziza, 45, pledged to protect the constitution under which he was first elected in 2005 after lengthy peace talks to end more than a decade of civil war in the tiny central African country, which claimed some 300 000 lives.

The country's main opposition groups stayed out of presidential and legislative polls in June and July respectively after accusing Nkurunziza's ruling party of rigging local elections in May.

Three opposition leaders have since the local polls gone into hiding fearing for their lives.
