Cairo - At least 64 people were killed in a massive rockslide that crushed dozens of homes in a Cairo slum over the weekend, a security official said on Wednesday, with the toll expected to rise further.
Several bodies were found on Wednesday, with many more feared buried under the rubble after giant boulders flattened dozens of homes in the shantytown of Manshiyet Nasser on Saturday, burying whole families.
Some television stations have said that as many as 500 people are feared to be buried under the rubble which extends to a depth of 15 metres.
Several rockslides occurred in the area previously, the most deadly of which killed 70 people in the adjacent district of Zabaleen in 1993.
Angry residents have clashed with authorities over what they say is a slow and inefficient response to the disaster.
