Cameroon charges 4 with homosexuality

2011-08-27 20:30

Yaounde - Cameroon authorities have charged four people aged 17 to 46 with homosexuality and remanded them in custody, their lawyer told AFP on Saturday.

"All four were remanded in custody yesterday [Friday] after having been charged the same day," said Michel Togue.

Two of them were also charged with "indecent behaviour involving a minor".

The lawyer said one of the accused "said he was arrested at his home on August 10" in the capital Yaounde after "somebody turned up and asked to see a 'gay film' in his company".

It was "obviously a set-up because police arrived to arrest him as they were watching the film", he added.

The three others were arrested when they visited him after his arrest.

Police were not available on Saturday to comment on the arrests which take the number of those detained in less than a month to seven.

Gay rights activists say the government is set to tighten anti-gay legislation further.

So disgustingly primitive. No wonder Africa is in the state it's in.

Why should it concern others what one's preferences or inclinations are? It is personal and can't possibly harm others. Yes, yes, we know it all and it has been repeated a million times. But why then the insistence to forcefully interfere with others' private lives? Fear/fascination with the subject and of course having to to vigorously and harshly act as anti-gay as possible to eradicate all suspicion in one's own and others' minds about that bothersome inkling deep down inside that so uncomfortably reminds us all that almost all of us have something of the opposite sex in our makeup. Some just protest too much. Leave others alone.

Surely SAVING LIVES IN SOMALIA AND ABUJA - even Libya and developing productive trade, should be every African nations foremost priority and uppermost on their minds?

As black Africans who went through the prejudice of colonialism, you should be ashamed of yourselves Cameroonians, and you should demand change. Take to the steets until these bigots are removed from power.
