Yaounde - A Cameroonian court overnight sentenced a former secretary general of the presidency to 15 years in prison for attempting to misappropriate funds earmarked for a presidential jet and slapped a life sentence in absentia on a British auditing CEO.

A court of appeals in Yaounde found that Jean-Marie Atangana Mebara, also a former minister of foreign affairs, and Joseph Kevin Walls, head of an auditing company for the aviation industry, were guilty of attempted embezzlement of $31m released by Cameroon in 2001 for the purchase of a presidential jet that was never delivered.

The court also found Atangana Mebara guilty of conspiring with the former ambassador to the United States Jerome Mendouga to embezzle around $185m in connection with the same affair.

Last month, ex-minister of territorial administration and decentralisation Marafa Hamidou Yaya was also jailed for 25 years for embezzling money intended as a down-payment on the jet.
