Kano - Nigeria's military says two suspected members of a radical Islamist sect were killed and two soldiers wounded when a car bomb exploded during a raid on a suspected hideout for the group.

Brigadier General Iliyasu Abba told journalists on Saturday the attack happened at about 01:00 in the northern city of Kano.

Abba said suspected members of the sect known as Boko Haram detonated the explosive during the raid in Sabuwar Gandu neighbourhood of the city.

Abba said authorities arrested four wives and eight children at the compound after the blast, which left broken glass, blood and part of the home destroyed.

Boko Haram has been waging an increasingly bloody fight against Nigeria's weak central government.

An Associated Press count shows the sect is blamed for killing more than 360 people this year alone.
