Bangui - The embattled town of Ndele in the north of the Central African Republic was calm on Thursday after a deadly attack by rebels early this week, an association of journalists reported.

A statement from the Network of Journalists for Human Rights spoke of a "precarious calm" at the town after Monday's attack by fighters of the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity (UFDR).

The commander of the paramilitary police force there was killed during the raid, a gendarmerie source told AFP on Thursday.

A military source close to the high command had already reported having lost one of their soldiers, though no official toll has been released.

Ndele, a town of between 15 000 and 20 000 people, has been subject to raids in the past and during Monday's attack many local people fled into the bush.

One rebel leader known as "Colonel Narkoyo" said government troops were in disarray.

On Tuesday, Narkoyo said that "nothing has been done to lift us out of hardship" in the wake of peace agreements signed with the Bangui government in April 2007.

Ndele, a town close to the Chadian border, which lies on busy trade routes linking Sudan and Cameroon, was at the heart of clashes between different rebel groups and the army between 2007 and 2010.

Rebel fighters also attacked the towns of Sam Ouandja and Ouadda, in the northeast, about 200km from Ndele, where few government soldiers were posted.
