Chad kidnap: 'Paris let us down'

2007-11-21 09:53

N'Djamena - A French charity's head, who is in a Chadian jail accused of trying to abduct 103 children to France last month, says the government in Paris has let him and his colleagues down.

Zoe's Ark chief Eric Breteau said: "The French government let us down. They even made it worse for us." He insisted that the French government had known about their operation.

Breteau was arrested, along with 16 other Europeans and four Chadians, last month after allegedly attempting to bring the children to France.

A Spanish flight crew, three French journalists and a Belgian pilot were later released but six French charity workers and the four Chadians remained in jail in N'Djamena on charges of child abduction and fraud. The Chadians were charged with complicity.

The Zoe's Ark staff had said they believed the children were orphans from neighbouring Sudan's war-torn Darfur region. Breteau said the charity had proof that it acted within the law, adding that the truth would eventually come out.

'Village chiefs lied to us'

Breteau said: "For us they are Darfur orphans and we never met their families." His assistant Emilie Lelouch said village "chiefs who worked with us may have lied to us" about the children's identity.

She added: "If these children had parents why did we never see them since the children were with us for more than six weeks?"

The six charity workers appeared to be in good health and said they were being well treated by prison authorities. Breteau regretted that the case had been drawn into the media spotlight.

He said: "Everybody is talking but us. They are trying to stop us from talking." The group shared two cells, which were open during the day. The Chadians were being held in other cells on the same floor.

According to an investigation by international aid organisations, most of the children involved in the Zoe's Ark operation were from Chadian border villages and had at least one parent or an adult they considered a parent.

Those detained risked up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy had vowed to return to Chad to bring home "those who stayed behind" after bringing back three French journalists and four Spanish air hostesses earlier this month.

But the French authorities had also officially distanced themselves from the charity's operation, saying it was "illegal and irresponsible".

Sarkozy's statement provoked tensions with Chad, a former French colony. President Idriss Deby Itno insisted that "justice will be spoken here in Chad".

Latest comment in Africa

Francois says... Alan, maybe you are not so smart if you cannot cut and paste of type a person's name correctly even if it is listed above your comment box, but let us not go into that for too long. I did not say he alone must walk to Mugabe, he can actually drive in his new car. I implied that his tactics to present did not work, he refers to Utopia in his speeches and he expects South Africans to the job for him and his supporters whereas in Egypt and Tunisia and Libya, the people did the job themselves, hence he must take all his supporters and start marching. The odd rape here and there and the illegal imprisonment here and there and the famine is overlooked by the West as they will just drop a few food parcels there. If Zim wants to change course, it is up for the people of Zim to take their future into their hands and not make condoning statements about blood diamonds. Tsvangirai, may have been beaten, but now he is playing the role of Mugabe's bunny. Read the article...
