Lusaka - A Zambian court has ordered the sale of assets of an institute being built by former president Frederick Chiluba, due to an unpaid debt of $1.8bn, a lawyer said on Thursday.
"We have been given the order to appoint a liquidator to dispose of the assets of the institute," said Kelvin Bwalya, who is representing various creditors, following a ruling on Wednesday by the Lusaka High Court.
The former head of state and ex-trade union leader had been building the Frederick Chiluba Institute for Democratic and Industrial Relations, where he wanted to teach after retiring from politics.
Chiluba, who ruled Zambia between 1991 and 2001, along with some of his former aides, face charges of allegedly stealing $45m from the state.
The hearings of two different corruption cases are due to resume this month.
