Christians, Muslims riot

Cairo - Egyptian officials say police have fired tear gas to quell clashes between Christians and Muslims in a southern village.

A security official says several shops were set on fire in Sunday's rioting in el-Tayaba, 220km south of Cairo. No casualties were reported.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the media.

Fighting erupted late on Friday after allegations that Muslims had sexually harassed a Christian woman.

Police arrested 48 suspects.
