Madrid - A plane bound for Amsterdam from Ghana made an emergency stop in Barcelona on Tuesday after a Ghanaian passenger began vomiting sachets of cocaine, police said.

The 37-year-old passenger began to feel ill after one of dozens of sachets he had swallowed burst inside his stomach while the plane was flying in Spanish airspace, Spanish media quoted police as saying.

Police were waiting for the man at the airport and he underwent emergency surgery shortly afterwards, with doctors removing 96 sachets of cocaine weighing a total of 1.8kg from his stomach.

Spain is one of the main points of entry for cocaine in Europe, and a record 46.6 tons of the drug was seized last year.
