Compaore favoured to win

Ouagadougou - Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore will run against six candidates in November's poll, which he is expected to win comfortably, election authorities said on Saturday.

Compaore has ruled the West African country since 1991 and is running for his fourth term of office.

The 59-year-old is heavily expected to win on Novermber 21 after securing more than 80% of the votes in the last poll in 2005, and some opposition groups have called for a boycott, claiming the vote will be fixed in advance.

Compaore's ruling party is seeking to abolish constitutional limits on the presidential term of office.

Compaore will run against two opponents from the 2005 poll, Beneende Stanislas Sankara, who scored 4.88%, and Pargui Emile Pare, who scored less than 1%, according to a listed published on Saturday by the Constitutional Council.

First-time candidates are former army commander Boukary Kabore, diplomat and former UN official Hama Arba Diallo, hydrogeologist Ouampoussoga Francois Kabore, and independent Maxime Kabore.
