Conde pardons 40 opposition members
Conakry - Guinean President Alpha Conde has pardoned some 40 opposition members who were arrested in April when opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo returned to the country, a statement said.
The statement read on national television on Monday night said Conde "pardons all citizens sentenced following the violence and acts of vandalism during protests when Cellou Dalein Diallo returned to Conakry on April 3".
The pardons had come at the request of the families of those convicted.
Thousands of members of the Guinean Union of Democratic Forces had gathered to welcome Diallo home after four months of absence on April 3, and the rally turned violent as police cracked down on the crowd.
The opposition and non-governmental organisations said four were killed while many were injured with bullet wounds.
At least 37 members of the Guinean Union of Democratic Forces, the main opposition party which is led by former prime minister Diallo, were arrested and sentenced to prison for between six months and two years.
